Jennifer E. (Jenny) Deegan’s legal practice focuses on: family law/divorce, criminal law, juvenile proceedings and general litigation.
Jenny graduated from the James Madison College at Michigan State University in 1992. She graduated from University of Detroit, Mercy School of law in 1996 and was admitted to the practice of law later that year. She is also admitted to practice in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Michigan. Jenny has practiced in trial courts throughout the state and has argued cases at the Court of Appeals.
Jenny began her legal career in the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office where she worked as a law clerk writing appeals. She was later hired as a trial attorney in the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office, and she also served as the Chief Assistant Prosecutor in Sanilac and Charlevoix counties. Jenny has extensive jury and bench trial experience, having handled both criminal and civil cases.
Jenny started in private practice in 2005 and worked as a solo practitioner in her own law firm, the Law Office of Jennifer E. Deegan, PLLC, in Harbor Springs, MI. She later joined Stroup Meengs, PC in Petoskey, MI. In April 2020, she partnered with her colleagues to start Nelson Deegan Forster & Stikovich, PC.
Jenny has utilized her communication skills and ability to connect with her clients to build a successful family law/divorce practice. She now concentrates her practice in the fields of family law/divorce, criminal law, juvenile law and general litigation.
Jenny regularly attends conferences and seminars to keep updated on changes in the law. She uses her knowledge of the court system, including juvenile proceedings and child protective proceedings, to provide comprehensive services to her family law/divorce clients. She also works closely with other professionals, including accountants and financial planners, when appropriate and approved by her clients.
Jenny is pleased to offer alternate dispute resolution (ADR) services as part of her practice. ADR services allow clients to achieve their goals by employing alternate methods to the “traditional” adversarial litigation model for resolving disputes. Collaborative Law and Mediation are examples of ADR.
Collaborative divorce is gaining popularity as an alternative to the traditional model of divorce with a goal to place the parties in control of their outcome. With the collaborative process, parties can streamline their case and achieve results that work for their family. Jenny received this specialized training through the Collaborative Practice Institute of Michigan in 2016.
Jenny is also a trained Mediator. Her services are used by attorneys in the area to assist with resolving complicated disputes. She has also worked with parties who wish to mediate their issues prior to filing for divorce.
Jenny is a trustee of the Harbor Springs-Petoskey Community Foundation and the Secretary of the Executive Board. She also sits on the Board for New Beginnings Resale Shop in Harbor Springs. She is a graduate of the Leadership Little Traverse program. She is a member of the Family Law, Children’s Law and Criminal Law sections of the Michigan Bar Association.
